EXERCISE ONCOLOGY

Evidence strongly indicates that exercise is an important adjunct therapy during cancer treatment. Keeping physically active and engaging in individually prescribed exercise medicine considerably lowers adverse effects during treatment, as well as significantly reduces the risk of cancer recurrence and mortality.

Benefits of a cancer rehabilitation & exercise medicine program

Improve treatment efficacy

  • Enhance resilience before starting cancer therapies

  • Use exercise as an adjuvant therapy to improve treatment response to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone and immune therapies

  • Stimulate the immune system response with increased cell production, controlling tumor growth, and normalising blood vessel structures; reducing cancer progression

  • NO evidence indicates that exercise causes cancer to worsen or proliferate

Reduce side-effects of therapy

  • Improve tolerance of treatment, and reduce risk of developing treatment-induced effects

  • Balance fatigue and energy levels with alternating programs depending on your treatment cycles

  • Lymphedema management with safe and graduated exercise to improve lymphatic drainage, increase function, and support pain management.

  • Reduce and manage chemotherapy-induced toxicities

  • Improve bone health, and ability to carry out daily activity

  • Better manage your mental health

Supportive & individualised

  • Having a professionally prescribed, person-focused, and closely monitored program is key to keeping physically active and tolerating daily tasks with a cancer diagnosis and treatment.

  • We understand that every individual is different, and there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach.

  • It is important to maintain exercise regardless of your cancer type, stage, or treatment timeframe. An experienced clinician should tailor your exercise medicine program to your needs and goals.
